It's been so long since I needed After Effects that I've mostly forgotten how to use it.Official Discussion TIL Content Q's Technical Q's Critique Others Seeking Collab Personally, I can do almost everything I need with Motion. If you need to do complex compositing or to create realistic natural effects, go with After Effects. For TV programming where graphic, titles, and transitions are important, Motion is a great choice. Which software you might want to use depends on what you're editing. ![]() It is also tightly integrated with FCPX for creating very complex transitions and reusable title templates. However, for many purposes Motion is more flexible and easier to use. For pure special effects work, After Effects is far more capable. Motion is really a different animal that After Effects. Rearranging scenes in a track-based system is always hazardous because of elements potentially going out of sync. An attached clip will remain in sync with the clip to which it is attached. Secondary audio, titles, still images, cutaways, etc., can be "attached" to clips in the main storyline so that they remained their time relationships. This approach not only avoids gaps in your program, it also makes the rearranging the order of shots in a program extremely easy. Many beginning uses of FCPX find this approach frustrating and confusing, and it is until you "get it". ![]() FCPX also uses the concept of a "storyline", also referred to as the "magnetic timeline". If you put a clip containing sound and picture into a FCPX project, it retains its integrity and won't get accidentally out of sync. Premiere and other editors use a film model where picture and individual audio elements are on separate tracks, but picture and sound can be "linked" to stay in sync. It is also extremely well supported on Mac hardware and can work without rendering on complex scenes where Premiere will grind to a halt on the same hardware.įCPX works on a different model, a different way of thinking. Many extensive projects have been edited in FCPX. FCPX is extremely deep and capable and is very much suitable and useable for "real works". For typical projects FCPX is both faster and easier in my experience. I have used both, but FCPX is always my software of choice. ![]() Premiere is fine- if it doesn’t break, or have had serious workflow halting issues seemingly more and more often.īeen a trainer for premiere and ae and motion and fcp for like 8 years traveling the world- and fcp is still the fastest way to edit for me, but like I said Apple isn’t doing itself any favors by throwing in updates like 360 support or 3D text when those aren’t the things most people are using and wanting for daily production. I have apple photos which I can search for any person, object or place, but can’t do that in final cut and analyze clips? Imagine what that and transcription could do for editing interviews.īut I honestly see resolve being the next Avid. I have cool 3D tracking on my phone but nothing in fcp or motion? Wtf? I have auto transcription on my phone, and my watch- but not final cut? I LOVE motion, and use it daily for work, but Apple who has some of the most money, and most talent in the entire planet seems to not see much use in competing in this area, which is really surprising. There’s not even a drop shadow effect- just lumped in groups. Motion can do like 80% of what Ae can do but frankly Apple has been unable or unwilling to give it a serious update in over a decade. The biggest drawback is way more people use Adobeland software in ONE department or more be it photo shoot or illustrator or whatever so it all works together. Depends where you work and what you are doing.Ĭutting and edits and color and most of the stuff production is doing for quick turnaround? News and public affairs? Episodic content? All stuff I’ve done and do with fcp in different studios. ![]()
